The Shoals is Not the Many/Go with Mo?

We haven't yet endorsed any candidates beyond a local level. We will state that as honest and brilliant a person Dr. Parker Griffith is, Mo Brooks has made things happen. He will be our personal choice tomorrow. Starting over every two years is not the way to make things happen for us on a national level.

But what of the presidential race? We see that our friend Justin has put in a plug for Santorum. We're still not sure if that is humor or not. Romney seems the lesser of all the evils floating about in the Republican flotsam, but should we lose sleep over our choice?

The Shoals is a very small frog to any presidential candidate. We're sure each of them, if here, would speak with great fervor of what he planned to do for this area. We're also sure that six months later, that candidate would say, "Muscle Shoals? Is that in Georgia or Florida." No, we can't compete with New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago; however, the way things are looking we may soon be able to give Detroit a run for its money.

We'll come back to another of Justin's comments. He feels we are to care for all who come to us for aid, but we ask how can we? It has always been our belief that if each community makes the most of its resources, those communities won't need the state except in dire emergencies. If states put an honest effort into recruiting industry, they won't need the Federal government to assist in local projects.

It begins here in the Shoals for us. It begins with such individuals as Mel Grimes and Keith Coillier Jr. who have proved themselves in other areas, who have no personal agenda. If we continue to vote vipers in, we can't expect to receive anything less than venom from our elected officials.

A few have asked about Lane Roland's current involvement with the North Alabama Gas District, if any. We have been unable to contact Mr. Roland; however, one reader who knows Mr. Roland personally has stated he doubts that Roland remains as a consultant. In this day of social media reign, this is a perfect example of why Facebook should be a must for every candidate.

We'll add a humorous note that Roland's opponent for the Colbert County commission seat, Troy Woodis, has not answered The Connection's article concerning his recent financial problems. Several readers have mentioned Kilgore Hardware has made copies of the piece and is passing them out to customers. Well...we do believe in being politically proactive. Link: Troy Woodis

Our poll on linking a blog showcasing a sex offender has ended. Over three hundred votes were cast, and by a small margin, readers have asked that we not link the blog to ours. We appreciate those who do send us links to local blogs. We can't promise to link all of them, but we will try to find room for those that promote the growth and safety of the Shoals area.

Pizza & Parker - Two Madison Surprises

Joe's Pizzeria in Madison rolled out the football pizza today, among them one depicting Nick Saban. No word on how much Shoals blogger O.B. offered the award winning pizza maker for a replica to hang on his wall.

*****

The second big event in Madison County today was Parker Griffith's announcement that he will run against incumbent Mo Brooks. Apparently we aren't the only ones with Republican leanings to be shocked. We're guessing Dr. Griffith will have an uphill battle.

The former one-term representative is publicly stating Mo's political philosophy is composed mainly of rhetoric. Well...we do get a lot of press releases from him.

Anyone take a good look at the pics accompanying Scott Beason's announcement that he will run for Congress? The current state senator from Gardendale, capital of White Flight, was wearing his usual Bama bangs, and the aura of the photo smacked of the latest edition of Awkward Family Photos.

And we hear he's hoping to someday make it to the White House...

Terrell Potter for Franklin County Sheriff

Five candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination for Sheriff in Franklin County. Among them is Terrell Potter, a veteran officer with Franklin police departments and the County District Attorney's office.

Anyone who knows Mr. Potter will undoubtedly be voting for him, but if there should be any Franklin County citizens who have yet to meet Terrell, we invite you to check out his website. Franklin County has been plagued with malfeasance and corruption in the past. With Terrell Potter as sheriff, you can be assured of honest law enforcement in an efficient manner. We take great pleasure in endorsing Terrell Potter for Franklin County Sheriff.

Parker Griffith in Florence on May 7th

The Shoals Republican Club will host Congressman Parker Griffith on Friday, May 7th from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the offices of Weichert Realtors located on the 5th floor, 412 South Court Street in downtown Florence. Griffith is running for re-election to Congress in the Republican Primary, June 1st. Congressman Griffith will speak about current issues before Congress as part of the meet and greet in Florence. The event is free and open to the public.

As a member of Congress representing North Alabama, Griffith continues to fight for us by working to lower taxes, investing in education, creating and keeping valuable jobs and representing our values in Washington. He has served our community as a doctor and a small businessman creating jobs. As the first Board Certified Radiation Oncologist in North Alabama, he has played a leading role in the early diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer. This experience continues to aid him in addressing and fighting for the health care needs of our community and opposing national health care reform efforts that are bad for patients and bad for our nation.

Before attending medical school, he taught seventh grade math, and he continues to lecture in our schools on science and health issues. In addition, Congressman Griffith is involved in local schools through the Griffith Family Foundation, which awards the Reading Readiness Grant to public elementary school libraries for the purchase of books and tools to enhance the reading readiness of their students. Parker and his wife, Virginia, have five children and eleven grandchildren.

For more information about Congressman Griffith and his campaign visit his website at www.griffithforcongress.com or contact Blake Harris at (256)-881-5059. All meetings of the Shoals Republican Club are open to the public. For more information, contact Shoals Republican Club President William Smith at (256) 767-4529, or ShoalsRepublicanClub@gmail.com.

Thanks: To the Shoals Republican Club for hosting Dr. Griffith. While it won't be the congressman's first visit to Florence by any means, we hope everyone will discard party affiliation to demonstrate just what a wonderful area the Shoals is.

Meet Les Phillip

Les Phillip is black. Les Phillip is a Republican. Les Phillip is conservative. Les Phillip wants to unseat Dr. Parker Griffith in the next election.

We make no secret of our conservative views here. We have also make no secret that we have supported Dr. Griffith in the past and are pleased with his representation so far. Yet, there is a new force to be reckoned with, a very unusual force.

Here is Mr. Phillip's website: http://www.lesphillip.com/

Tomorrow: What The Attack Machine says about Les Phillip.

Dr. Parker Griffith for Progress

In a conservative area, it's not every four years that a U.S. Congressional seat is up for grabs. In two weeks, we of the Shoals and the Tennessee Valley will have the opportunity to elect the person who will serve us for the next twenty years or more. This is undoubtedly the second most important race on the ballot and one that we should thoroughly research.

If you've read my bio, you know that I am conservative. I don't deny that I usually support the majority of Republican candidates in any election. There is no way that I can support Wayne "Peanut" Parker.

Unlike his opponent, Wayne Parker has run a dirty race and now must reap what he has sewn. Even without his unfounded jabs at Dr. Griffith, Parker has shown himself to be a man of little substance who will grasp at any issue in order to create a controversy and amass votes from those who are of the lower strata of the population. Does any intelligent person actually think the U.S. Department of Education is passe'? Perhaps Wayne Parker plans to create the Department of Misinformation and ensconce himself as its director.

Vote Dr. Parker Griffith on November 4. Our future depends on it.

What's up with this: Yesterday's column on Sheffield potholes garnered some e-mail and comments--namely, the Darby family should be ashamed of its part in allowing Sheffield to become the eyesore it has in the last thirty years.
