Doug Jones and a Catholic Supreme Court

Various census records show that the United States is 22% Catholic. How about the Supreme Court? It's now 67% Catholic. In other words, the court has a ratio three times as great as the entire country. Why? Many suggest that Republican presidents have intentionally nominated Catholics in order to overturn Roe v. Wade.

It's also been suggested that many, including Doug Jones, have been worried about this trend. No, it's not because of the induced abortion controversy, but due to questions about the judges' allegiance to a foreign power - the Vatican.

If one examines Sen. Jones' votes on various issues, the bills he has introduced, and his influence on moving Alabama forward, the picture of our junior senator is very positive. This blog is not making an endorsement in the senatorial race. We're pretty sure J. Redmon, Leslie M. Shoals, and Sheffield Shelly will be voting for Tommy. Shoalanda herself will cast her vote for Doug.

We're merely asking that you look at facts in this race, not false and illogical Facebook memes. You'll be doing our state and yourself a favor.

Less than Ten Thousand Votes!

As it stands now, Doug Jones won the Alabama Senate race by less than 10,000 votes. What if 10,000 Jones supporters had decided not to vote today? We're certainly glad they made the right decision!

Now what of Roy Moore? Will he run for governor? It wouldn't surprise us. Will his accusers continue to try to prove their claims. We hope they will. Will more accusers come forward? If Moore does have more victims out there, we hope they will also have the courage to come forward. We know it's not easy, but do you want this man for your governor?

And what of Mo Brooks? In the past, we've supported Mo Brooks, but no more. He not only supported Roy Moore, he actually ran from reporters and hid so that he wouldn't have to answer questions concerning his support. Surely this district can find someone better...

Are You an Independent?

Labels are not set in concrete, but most of us wear them from time to time. Only last week our blog was called, for the second time in its history, "liberal." Why? We don't support nutter Roy Moore.

Does supporting a moderate Democrat make us liberal? We sincerely doubt it. We've lamented before that taking a middle of the road stance means being attacked from both ends. So be it.

Not only have we been called liberal, but we've also had conservative friends brought into the critical mix who don't write here and probably couldn't care less about the election, been called a snowflake, had a dead sister vilified, and the list goes on.

The salient point now is: Can Doug Jones win in December? We're told he can if those who claim the mantle of Independent vote. Jones is currently six points behind Moore in most polls, meaning that if the election were held today, Jones would garner 47% of the vote...at least among those surveyed.

Can Jones make up that difference in ten weeks? We're betting he can. If he doesn't? Then we'll be seeing Roy Moore and our entire state portrayed on Saturday Night Live...and it won't be pretty.

Can it again be October? Why, yes. Yes, it can!

"I Will Not Embarrass You" - Doug Jones

Remember actor Dick Van Patten? He was never a leading man, not because he lacked talent, but we assume because he didn't look like Cary Grant. In other words, he was often overlooked, and many who watched him every week on television probably couldn't have told you his real name.

Dick Van Patten

We realized tonight that Van Patten is whom Doug Jones reminds us of. You know...Doug Jones? He's the one who doesn't wear a cowboy hat or wave guns at political rallies in order to get applause.

Doug Jones wants to be our next senator. Will he make it? Not having a direct route to any oracles at the moment, we can't say. We can say one of Jones' campaign promises is not to embarrass our state. That looks pretty good for starters. Yes, a sad commentary on the state of state politics.

Most agree that Richard Shelby is in his last term in the senate. Of course, he could run again, but probably won't. He doesn't need the money, fame, or the headaches at this point in his life. Whoever wins our senate election in December could soon be our senior representative in that governing body. If that isn't a sobering thought, we don't know what is.

Serious question for our readers: Would you hire a 22 year-old man, currently under indictment in Lauderdale County and with an outstanding warrant for his arrest, who has had at least 13 arrests in the past five years?

Ah, we're sure most of us forget that it's the media's fault that the man can't get a job. After all, who does background checks?

Special: For All You Democrats/UNA

Alabama elections are always crap shoots. A current theory among political pundits is that if Roy Moore, hated by many both conservative and liberal, wins the Republican nomination, a Democrat will win the general election. It could happen.

So who's the best in the Democratic field. We pick Doug Jones or Robert Kennedy Jr. Both have a head on their shoulders and seemingly care about the state.

Our, ahem, chief Democratic advisor tells us he's voting for Doug Jones. We're predicting a runoff with Jones and (probably) Kennedy. If Moore should win the Republican primary, let's hope a strong Democratic candidate can beat him.

Did you hear about the first UNA football scrimmage of the season yesterday? Did they have a fistfight? No...they had five fistfights. If these guys can't refrain from hitting their own team, how many penalties will the university be seeing this season?

What is wrong with UNA?

So far the university hasn't gotten any good press over its "sexual misconduct" press release. Sexual misconduct? That's when a pimply faced boy attempts to accidentally on purpose touch his date's breasts as he pretends to assist her with buckling her seat belt. Sexual misconduct is slapping a co-worker on the backside. Sexual misconduct is looking at porn on the office computer.

Rape is just slightly more than "sexual misconduct." No wonder the majority of our mail is in favor of riding Kenneth Kitts and David Shields out of town on a barbed wire stretcher.
