Bill Griffin's a Hero? Who Knew?

Our Florence Detective is once again exposing some oddities of the Florence City Council. While we feel Brad Holmes is the best choice for Lauderdale EMA Director, we agree with the FD that, considering the importance of the job, the position should have been posted.

From the Florence Detective (flodetective@gmail.com):

Chat GPT on Microsoft has the following information about Brad Holmes:

Brad Holmes, a distinguished figure in Florence, Alabama, has made significant contributions to the community. Here are some of his notable achievements:

1. Police Captain:

• Brad Holmes serves as a Police Captain at the Florence Police Department. His leadership and commitment have positively impacted law enforcement in the area.

2. FBI National Academy Graduate:

• Brad successfully completed the 286th session of the FBI National Academy. This prestigious program equips law enforcement professionals with advanced skills and knowledge, enhancing their ability to serve and protect the community.

3. Local Ties and Education:

• As a lifelong resident of the Shoals area, Brad has deep roots in the community.

• He graduated from the University of North Alabama, majoring in Business Management.

• Currently, he manages family business holdings and real estate in downtown Florence at Anderson & Anderson, LLC.

Brad Holmes’s dedication to public service and his impact on the safety and well-being of Florence residents are commendable.

In addition to these many accomplishments, Mr. Holmes has recently been nominated to fill the position of EMA director left open when George Grabryan retired. This was the item on the consent agenda for the 03/05/2024 meeting of the Florence city council:

(u) Resolution to approve the appointment of Captain Brad Holmes as Director of Emergency Management and Emergency 911 Operations, and the EMA/ 911 Director Services Agreement, sponsored by Bill Musgrove. Given Mr. Holmes experience, his qualification for this position is beyond question. This was the first point Councilmen Bill Griffin made when he objected to this agenda item. He went on to state that what concerned him was the job was not posted as a job opening.

It became apparent that Bill’s position was not agreeable with the rest of the council. Particularly Dick Jordan. I could not help but think: the man who saw to it that his wife and son were positioned into cushy city jobs with good salaries and benefits had the nerve to defend an appointed position? Just “choose” someone rather than it being posted so all who wished to apply in the city of Florence had the opportunity.

And, for some reason, questioning the way this position was to be filled seemed to also rub Jimmy Oliver the wrong way. He made a point in his remarks to say that the council was doing nothing illegal by appointing Holmes to the position, although Mr. Griffin never accused anyone of illegality. Only a form of nepotism. “Good ol' boy” practices on display! And when put to a vote; Mr. Griffin was the lone "no" vote on the agenda item to appoint Brad Holmes EMA director.

Bill Griffin was the hero of this meeting. He pointed out another case of favoritism in the city of Florence hiring practices. Fortunately, with this choice, the city did get it right. Brad Holmes is very qualified to be the director of EMA. But since this position will now be under the city payroll system it should have been posted for other candidates to apply like any other city job. Bill Griffin stated it was not the choice of candidate that bothered him, it was the way he was chosen. This reporter gives kudos to Bill Griffin and thanks him for pointing out another shady hiring decision by this council.

Who's Best? and Forged Bios

Our blog on new Sheffield BOE member Scott Trimble was highly criticized in two areas. We hope this post clears up the confusion.

First, an apology. It seems Mr. Trimble and his daughter both attended elementary school in Sheffield (we had implied they hadn't); however, both transferred to Muscle Shoals for high school. We will let each reader decide how relative that is to Mr. Trimble's current position. We are curious as to why elementary schools are adequate, but the high school is not.

Second, even though it was omitted from an online work bio, according to a family member, Trimble did teach at least two years at Sheffield before his coaching position at UNA. So why was this job not on his LinkedIn profile? Mr. Trimble has stated (via a family member) that he did not write the profile and was not aware that one had been posted. BIG REVEAL: We understand that Mr. Trimble was a volunteer coach at Sheffield and not an actual employee. This may be why it was not on his work resume.

This is reminiscent of a few years ago when high school students created a Facebook page for their principal stating he lived in a certain Colbert County town. The problem with the faux Facebook entry was that the principal held an elected office in Lauderdale County. We imagine the LinkedIn profile which omitted Trimble's short tenure at Sheffield was written by some bored cross-country runners from our local university. We hope Mr. Trimble can easily sort that problem.

We're happy to make these facts known. So are there those in Sheffield who are more qualified and willing to serve on the board of education? We welcome ideas and input from readers.

As we write this blog, we await the results of today's local and state primaries.Voting was light at our polling place. In fact, there were more poll workers than voters.

What does that say about us as citizens?

Interesting Doings in Muscle Shoals Today

Bully Bully Bully

Muscle Shoals is NOT the Muscle Shoals long time residents enjoyed.

Those who came "here" from "there" to only bring "there" to "here" are ruining our city that people like David Bradford, Ricky Williams, Elaine Coan and many others that have the heart and love for the people.

People from "there" have become the adult bullies. Bullying business owners, Bullying citizens, Bullying employees.

Where else can a high school bully who was one of the "mean girls" become a secretary, then cross the city border from Tuscumbia and become the mayor's girl friday?

When a citizen witnesses Mikie Lockhard inside City Hall and the bully tells the citizen that Mikie "isn't in" only confirms the magnitude of the problems in city hall.

The employees are being done the same as the average citizen. Lies, bullying, intimidation, harassment, threatening retaliation to anyone that dares to speak out against the bullies in city hall.

Tuscumbia bully, your school years victims are talking. We are *listening. You can go home with Lockhard when we run him out of city hall.

Reader Takes Exception to Heather Mize's Listed Qualifications/Todd Nix

Sometimes a mistake on political or other advertising can be purely accidental; however, it is always important to make a correction. In the past, we have chastised both a Colbert County candidate and a Florence city employee for embellishing their titles. Now we must do the same concerning one of Heather Mize's ads:

In this ad, it's stated that Ms. Mize is both director and principal of the Deshler Career Technical Center. While Mize is the director of that facility, it is part of Desher High School, and the principal of the high school is in charge of discipline, etc. In other words, Ms. Mize is not the principal of anything.

We're glad a Colbert reader noticed this and called attention to it.

Meanwhile, in Lauderdale County, there will soon be a new commissioner in town. We're announcing that we support Todd Nix, but, Todd, you're not an adjunct professor. There is no such thing. You're an adjunct instructor.

That being said, we expect great things of Todd in the animal welfare department. Too long have local animals been overlooked and cast aside.

We proudly endorse Todd Nix for Lauderdale County Commissioner District 2!

What's Up with New Sheffield Board of Education Member?

Scott Trimble has been named to replace Steve Nix as District 3 representative on the Sheffield Board of Education. The announcement states that Mr. Trimble is a lifelong resident of the city. That sounds great, but...

Scott Trimble has lived in Sheffield his entire life, but he never attended any Sheffield City School, and neither has his daughter. They’re all Muscle Shoals folks.

It doesn't really sound as if Mr. Trimble has been that supportive of Sheffield schools in the past. Isn't there someone out there who really loves not just Sheffield, but its schools as well?

Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler to Retire?

Have you heard that Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler is retiring? No? Neither had we.

How did we hear? Earlier this week, TimesDaily writer Bernie Delinski just casually threw it out there in an article. In fact, it was so casual that we have to wonder if the chief asked Mr. Delinski to drop the bombshell as a kind of joke.

We're sure there will be more to follow...
